Mercy College

The Middletown Teacher Center, in collaboration with the NYSUT Education and Learning Trust and Mercy College is offering the following graduate degree and advanced certificate programs:

33-credit Master of Science in Teaching Literacy, Birth - Grade 12

 15-credit Advanced Certificate in Teaching Literacy, Birth - Grade 6

15-credit Advanced Certificate in Teaching Literacy, Grades 5 - 12

36-credit  Master of Science in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

33-credit  Master of Science in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) 

12-credit Advanced Certificate in TESOL

  • redit Master of Science in Teaching Literacy - Birth through Grade 1

New cohorts are scheduled to begin in July of 2012

Staff members from Mercy College and NYSUT-ELT will be there to talk about the program and answer questions.

About the programs:

Master’s Degree Program in Teaching Literacy - Birth through Grade 12 leads to professional certification in the teaching certificate presently held.  Participants in this program are required to possess an initial teaching certificate.

Advanced Certificate in Teaching Literacy, Birth to Grade 6 or Grades 5 to 12 will permit qualified applicants who have a Master’s Degree and hold a teaching certificate in another area to earn initial or professional certification in Teaching Literacy.  This certificate requires the completion of the Content Specialty Test in Literacy.

Master’s Degree Program in TESOL leads to initial or professional certification.

12-credit Advanced Certificate in TESOL permits qualified applicants, who have an MS degree in Education and holding a teaching certificate in another discipline to earn initial or professional certification in TESOL.

Five courses, fifteen credits (for Masters' programs) two courses, six credits (for advanced  certificate in teaching Literacy, birth to grade 6), one course, three credits (for advanced  certificate in teaching Literacy, grades 5 to 12), one course, three credits (for advanced certificate in TESOL) will be offered locally in the Middletown School District and will be treated as a cohort.  A minimum of 10 students is required for the cohort to run.  The maximum number allowed into the cohort is 25.

After successfully completing the courses locally, students will matriculate with the college to complete the program.  Mercy College will offer the remaining courses online and on-site at their campuses.

Tuition for the coursework taken locally is $645.00 per 3-credit course.

$110.00 administrative fee for each course taken locally is required at the time of registration.

Students in the cohort will receive a 1/3 tuition scholarship for the remaining credits.

2-Step Course registration:

1. Register for courses through www.MyLearningPlan.com on the NYSUT-ELT website (www.nysut.org/elt).  Tuition fees will be paid on the NYSUT-ELT site.

2. Register through www.MyLearningPlan.com on the Middletown Teacher Center Website (www.middletowntc.org)The required administrative fee will be documented on the Teacher Center site and paid either in cash or by check to the Middletown Teacher Center.

Immunization documentation is required by NYS Law.  Please submit all required documents to the Middletown Teacher Center.

You must be a NYSUT member to participate.  Associate memberships are available for those who are not members.
